Cooperations

Bremen Cotton Exchange
Bremen Fibre Institute maintains a cooperation agreement with the Bremen Cotton Exchange. The Institute was established in 1969, having begun as a laboratory set up by the Bremen Cotton Exchange in 1955. As a member of FIBRE's Board of Trustees, the Bremen Cotton Exchange has an active influence on the development of the Institute. The key tasks for FIBRE under the cooperation agreement are:

  • assuming responsibility for the Cotton Exchange's test laboratory, i.e. cotton testing and arbitrage testing, as well as advising the Cotton Exchange and its members,
  •  jointly organising the International Cotton Conference in Bremen,
  •  execution of the Bremen Cotton Round Trial as one of the most important tools for the international harmonisation of global cotton testing methods
  •  supporting the Cotton Seminar.

The test laboratory for cotton and wool was relocated back to the Cotton Exchange building in 2009. The Bremen Cotton Exchange and FIBRE also work closely together with regard to the activities for commercial standardisation of cotton testing (CSITC)

Since October 2011, several cooperation tasks previously undertaken by FIBRE and the Bremen Cotton Exchange have been handed over to the new cooperation between FIBRE and ICA Bremen.

ICA Bremen
On 4 October 2011, the ICA Bremen International Quality Testing and Research Centre (ICA Bremen) was founded as a joint venture between the Bremen Cotton Exchange and the International Cotton Association (ICA) in Liverpool. The global network of the ICA, based in Liverpool, combined with the technical experience available in Bremen has quickly become the international focal point for cotton testing and research, quality training and certification. This development was also accompanied by the start of the cooperation between FIBRE and ICA Bremen, whose key aims are to achieve the following:

  • all cotton testing to be performed exclusively in the FIBRE laboratory, under the name ICA Bremen,
  • all cotton testing equipment to be mutually determined by FIBRE and ICA Bremen,
  • FIBRE Round Trials to be executed in the name of ICA Bremen,
  • FIBRE and ICA Bremen to jointly develop and implement a programme for the certification of cotton laboratories and
  • FIBRE and ICA Bremen to jointly define research focal points to serve as a reference for FIBRE's future cotton research activities.

The new range of test options have already proven extremely popular with customers from both Bremen and the former Liverpool laboratory.
