The Institute

Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. (FIBRE) is a successful research institute for the development of high-performance fibre composites, manufacturing technologies, fibre development, quality assurance and material development and characterisation. FIBRE is the only institute in the German research landscape with this combination of core competences, a unique position achieved through continuous and successful basic and applied research over the last 20 years.

In the last five years, the Institute has been able to attract new partners from industry and research for joint research projects, in particular from the aerospace, automotive and wind energy sectors. Given the growing international dimension of customer demand, it makes sense for FIBRE to participate in international networks involving a range of different industry partners, research institutes and universities.

FIBRE‚Äôs research activities are supported via  close cooperation with the University of Bremen, which began in 1989. Under this agreement, FIBRE assumes a research and teaching role. Its location on campus ensures constant close contact to other institutes and students. FIBRE's successful research activities are also reflected in the growth of its workforce, which now numbers over 40 qualified engineers and scientists from a range of disciplines plus an active support team of 20 student assistants. To accommodate its ever expanding workforce, FIBRE rented further offices on campus in the Wilhelm-Herbst-Strasse in 2011.

FIBRE's Executive Board comprises three persons: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel S. Herrmann (Chairman and Institute Director), Christoph Hoffmeister and Axel Drieling. The Institute comprises two bodies; the Scientific Advisory Board and the Board of Trustees.
